Opportunity Garden is a collaboration with the Bresnahan Elementary School in Newburyport. Volunteers and participants experience the gardening process from seed to harvest together, hence the program’s vision: A Place to Grow Together. Twice a week, April through October, participants take part in planning, preparing the land, planting, watering, weeding and ultimately harvesting vegetables like zucchini, tomatoes, corn, onions and radishes. The produce harvested are incorporated into cooking groups back in the agency’s kitchen. Future plans include expanding the garden, executing a farm stand, incorporating green initiatives and even possibly building a greenhouse.
“Steve Boulay and I have spent the last two summers working in the Opportunity Garden with a dedicated group of people from Opportunity Works. Not only have I enjoyed helping them grow the vegetables and seeing them eat new foods but along the way I have made some lasting friendships.” ~ Sandra Nippes
